10th Anniversary Daicha Kai

Sunday, October 17, 2010, 11 AM – 4 PM

An afternoon with a variety of Japanese tea traditions serving in different locations throughout the Gardens.

This year will be our tenth so we are planning an extra special event. The heir of the Yabunouchi school of tea is bringing a group from Kyoto to demonstrate for us their way of tea. Since the Yabunouchi school is not one of the Sen family schools, which we are more familiar with, this will surely be a treat.

All participants will have an opportunity to see their tea and you may have the chance to join them at one of the many venues.
Due to the added costs we must ask a little more this year, $60, and encourage those who can to donate more.
In addition to the Yabunouchi tea you will have a chance to attend at least two other tea gatherings and a small lunch.
This year space may be limited so apply early to ensure your place. Please contact John Larissou 415-731-0622 or at Larissou@gmail.com

Noh Theater at Night by the Torch Lights

For the first time in Hakone's 95-year-history the Foundation will proudly present a rare Noh Theatre Torchlight Performance in the Gardens, featuring 11 Noh performers from Kyoto, Japan.

Noh is a form of classical Japanese musical drama dating back to 14th century where main characters perform dances with masks on. The story text has a lot of poetical allusions and the dances, though slow, are quite graceful.

Before the Noh, there will be a Kyogen Play by local players. A Noh expert will introduce before the show what Noh is, its history, and the spirits. This is a rare occasion to see the well-known Japanese play in the Bay Area. Light meal will be served.

Unfortunately, this Noh Theater production is SOLD OUT.

We apologize that this popular production has sold out so quickly, and thank you for your continued support of our historic Hakone.
