The late Kenzo Ogata, who passed away in 1988, was one of the most noted landscape architects in Japan who created a unique idea of combining nature gardens with traditional landscape technology, and trained over 200 successors. He taught at a number of colleges and was a leader of the Landscape Society of Japan, as well as being a recipient of several prominent gofermental awards for his achievements, one of which was for construction of Japanese gardens overseas, such as in Australia, Hawaii, Peru, and Washington D.C. His successors all over Japan established Ogata Kai (Ogata Group) in 2007 in honor of their Master, and have dedicated their volunteer services for selected Japanese gardens outside Japan, and Hakone was the only garden selected in the North America.
The visiting volunteers were Mr. Nagai (Board member of Ogata Kai), Mr. Hasegawa (Board member of Ogata Kai), Mr. Hoshino (Head Master/Board member of Ogata Kai), Mr. Kozeni, Mr. Takada, Mr. Morikawa, Mr. Sakamoto, Mr. Mori, Mr. Nobiraki, Mr. Ide, Mr. Tanaka (Garden Committee member of Hakone from Oregon), and Dr. Donuma (Advisor, Garden Committee Member of Hakone, and organizer). Local Architect volunteer Karl Bareis also joined in the effort.
Hakone is also very grateful for the help of the members of the Sister City of Saratoga for hosting these volunteers in their homes: Ken and Karen Akahoshi, Mike and Lucille Story, Gladys and Fred Armstrong, Bob and Marilyn Lenomand, Don and Lilian Morgan, Art and Aki Okuno, John and Aiko Tauchi, Tom and Jeanne Tsukuda, Tom and Ainin Edman, Dick and Judy Rossman, Dr. Masato and Tazu Matsuo, Reiko Iwanaga, Elaine Salter, and Peter Marra.
